Bathroom Refresh in Didsbury | Heatons Handyman
Some of the nicest jobs we get booked for start with someone wanting to do something kind. This one began with a mum in Didsbury who wanted to give her son Ollie a proper, useful present. Not a gadget or a voucher, but the thing he actually needed doing: his tired bathroom sorted out.
Ollie had bought his place a few years back and, like a lot of first-time buyers, most of his money had gone into the property itself. So his family stepped in to fund the improvements. If you are in Didsbury or anywhere around south Manchester and thinking about a bathroom refresh, here is exactly what two days on site can achieve, and why the job is not always what it looks like from the doorway.
The brief: a two-day bathroom refresh, kept flexible
Ollie's mum got in touch after taking some photos of the bathroom and sending them over before booking. From those pictures it was clear a few areas needed attention, so Martin proposed a two-day visit to improve as much as was sensibly possible in the time, with the bath and shower area as the main priority.
It was a deliberately flexible brief. Rather than ripping out the whole suite, the plan was to make the existing bathroom look and feel a lot better: strip out the old sealant, renew the grout around the bath and shower, and swap selected fittings where suitable replacement parts were available. What we could finish depended partly on the condition we uncovered once we started, and partly on which parts had actually arrived.

What we found once we got started
The bath sealant was in very poor shape, with mould coming through, so that was always going to be replaced. The bigger surprise was hiding in the tiling.
Someone had been in before us and run silicone straight over the grout lines between the wall tiles. On the face of it the tiling looked fine, but that silicone meant a straightforward regrout was not straightforward at all. Before we could put fresh grout anywhere, we first had to get all that old silicone out of the joints.
On top of that, the bath itself had a fair bit of movement in it, and there was an unusually large gap between the edge of the bath and the wall tiles. Luckily there was already an opening in the bath panel, so we had access underneath to deal with it properly.
Why the old silicone was the real job
This is the part worth understanding if you are pricing up a bathroom refresh yourself. A lot of the time on this job went on preparation you would never see in the finished result.
Cutting the silicone out of the wall-tile grout lines added roughly an hour and a half before any actual regrouting could begin. It is fiddly, careful work, because you are trying to clear the joints without chipping the tiles. Between removing that silicone, cutting out the old sealant around the bath and taking out the tired grout, the first full day was more or less gone before the pretty part started.
There is a useful distinction here too. The problem on this job was silicone sitting where grout should be, on the rigid wall-tile joints. That is not the same as silicone around the bath perimeter, which needs to stay flexible so it can cope with the bath moving slightly under weight. We renewed the flexible seals and put grout back where grout belongs. One is a fix, the other is just how a bath should be finished.
Sorting the bath movement and the big gap
With the joints cleared and regrouted, we turned to the bath. A wobbly bath is not something you seal over and hope for the best, because fresh silicone on a moving bath will crack and fail again before long.
We opened up the existing access point in the bath panel, got underneath, and raised the bath to the right level to settle the movement and its position. Only then did we reseal the perimeter, working around that oversized gap between the bath and the tiles so it came up neat and watertight. Doing it in that order is what makes the seal actually last.

The finishing details
Once the main bath and shower area was done, we used the remaining time on the smaller things that make a bathroom feel properly cared for. We replaced the bath waste and overflow with a fresh stainless steel finish set from Screwfix, and renewed the silicone around the basin and along the top shelf so everything matched the newly sorted bath.
We are always straight about what did not get done, because that is part of an honest job. A couple of the fittings Ollie had ordered himself caused problems. The new shower screen had not arrived by the time we were on site, and the shower head unit he had bought turned out to be the wrong type, so neither could go in. A replacement bath panel was asked for late on but was not available during the booking either. A radiator swap and a few other extras were also requested the day before we started, and Martin was upfront that those would need a third day. Ollie's family decided to keep it to the two days, which was completely fair, so we focused on getting the bath and shower area finished to a high standard.
The result
Even without the full wishlist, the change was significant. By renewing the grout and silicone and dealing with the bath movement, the tired bath and shower area went from being the worst part of the room to looking close to new, and all while keeping the original bath and wall tiles.
Martin reported the family were delighted. In Ollie's mum's own words:
What's not to love about Martin? He comes when he says and does a great job at a reasonable price. Martin re-sealed and re-grouted around our bathtub and hacked years of silicone out of the wall tiles, turned a very tired bathroom into looking almost new. We are now changing the floor and hey presto, it's like a new bathroom. Thank you.
They are now going on to change the flooring themselves to carry the improvement through the rest of the room, which is exactly the kind of momentum a good refresh should give you.
Thinking about a bathroom refresh in Didsbury or around Manchester?
You do not always need a full rip-out to get a bathroom you are happy with again. If your suite is sound but the grout, sealant and a few fittings are letting the whole room down, a targeted refresh can make a big difference in a couple of days. We cover Didsbury, M20 and the wider Manchester area.
Frequently asked questions
Can you refresh a tired bathroom without replacing the whole suite? Yes, and it is often the smarter option. If the bath, basin and tiles are in decent condition, renewing the grout and sealant, sorting any movement in the bath and swapping worn fittings can transform how the room looks and feels without the cost and disruption of a full replacement.
Why does regrouting sometimes take longer than expected? Because a lot depends on what previous work has left behind. On this Didsbury job, silicone had been run over the wall-tile grout lines, and clearing that out added about an hour and a half of preparation before we could even start regrouting. Old sealant, damaged tiles or a moving bath all add time that is not visible in the finished result.
My bath moves slightly when I stand in it. Can that be fixed? It should be, and it is worth doing before any resealing. A bath that moves will crack fresh silicone before long. Where there is access underneath, usually through the bath panel, we can raise and settle the bath to the right level first, then seal it, so the finish actually lasts.
Should silicone or grout be used between my wall tiles? Rigid wall-tile joints are meant to be grouted. Flexible silicone belongs where things move or meet, such as around the bath perimeter or where tiles meet a basin. Problems tend to start when silicone gets used over grout lines, because it makes future maintenance and regrouting much harder.
What should I check before buying my own fittings for a bathroom job? Make sure everything has actually arrived and is the correct type before the work is booked to start. On this job a shower screen had not turned up and a shower head unit was the wrong fit, so neither could be installed on the day. A quick check that each item is present and compatible saves a lot of frustration.
How much does a bathroom refresh cost? It depends on the condition we find, how much preparation is involved and which fittings you want replaced, so the honest answer is that it is worth getting a proper look first. We are happy to come out, see the room and give you a clear quote before anything is booked.
