Venetian Fence Installation – Garden Privacy in Heaton Moor

Today’s project took us to the back of Easy Fish in Heaton Moor, where the client, Lindsay, wanted a simple but effective privacy upgrade for her garden. With a block of flats directly overlooking her outdoor space, she needed something that would give her freedom to enjoy the patio without feeling watched.

The existing trellis was barely hanging on — old B&Q timber that collapsed at first touch. Our solution? A clean, sturdy, tanalised timber Venetian-style fence, designed to match the home’s aesthetic while significantly boosting privacy.

What We Installed

We removed the original trellis and built a new frame from scratch using materials sourced from Stockport Timber — our go-to for quality wood. We used:

2x4 tanalised timber for the frame
45x18mm wooden slats for the cladding
Over 130 linear metres of slats, precisely cut and fixed

Each slat had to be individually measured and cut. Over six metres of width and multiple vertical fix points meant the saw was running non-stop — especially with limited dry weather windows.

Challenges on Site

We ran into two key issues:

Party Wall Dispute:
The ideal fixing point was technically on the neighbour’s side. But due to a previous dispute, we mounted it inside the boundary. Not ideal, but necessary.
Leaning Brick Wall:
The structure we fixed onto was slightly off-plumb. We had to carefully shim and level the fixings to ensure the final look was straight from every angle.

Working in early November didn’t help — timing the job around the weather was a must, especially with the need to cut outside and drill into old brick.

Client Reaction

Lindsay was delighted. She described the finished fence as “smarter than I imagined” — clean lines, sturdy structure, and a huge improvement from the rotting trellis.

As for us? We’re proud of the result. We used proper wall plugs and hidden fixings to keep the look sleek and secure. It’s built to last — and to do its job: provide privacy without blocking all the light.
